Rumour has it that there was a 74 minute version of this episode and that there was two more extra scenes filmed that showed Richard giving Tremayne a audio cassette of the events that took place in Tibet; At the start of the episode and the second scene at the end of the episode
all three Champions decide not to give Tremayne the cassette. A print of this episode is said to have been broadcast in Australia but as yet this has not resurfaced....
Well rumours are often true, a member of The Champions Fan Club (click on the link you can join the club, it's free) has this taped, & has written verbatim the two scenes as below:
START
(Craig, Sharon and Richard are in Tremayne's office)
Richard: "Tremayne must have been delayed."
Craig: "Yeah, I guess so."
Richard: "Don't you think it's about time we told him what happened?"
Craig: "Told him? Tremayne? What, everything?"
Richard: "Yes, everything. How we crashed in the mountains; the meeting we had; the powers. How we ended up the way we did. Don't forget, Tremayne's got some ideas of his own already."
Sharon: "But they were only guesses."
Richard: "Well all the more reason, I'd have thought."
Sharon: "I don't know."
Craig: "I do. I'm against it. I mean, tell me Richard, how do you start?"
Richard: "At the beginning. And we wouldn't have to be present, we could put it on the tape."
Sharon: "So he couldn't ask any questions."
Richard: "If you like, yes." (Switches tape recorder on.) "Craig, Sharon and I have a story to tell you, Tremayne. A story for your ears only." (Original version of The Beginning starts, missing out the opening 'map' intro.) "It all started on our first mission together; that is, the first time Sharon worked with us. We'd arrived at the research centre. We'd left the plane at the foot of the mountains; the journey had gone as planned. We were watching the guards, waiting for our contact to signal..."
END
(Original version of The Beginning ends at the point where Craig says: "Well, when you put it that way, I guess we had a little luck.")
Richard: "And that's how we left it. We didn't give you any answers because we didn't have any. We didn't even know what the powers were ourselves." (Switches off tape recorder.) "Well, that's it."
Craig: "Every word." (Phone rings and Craig answers.) "Yes, OK, we understand, thank you." (Puts receiver down.) "Tremayne can't make it. He said he'd see us first thing in the morning."
Sharon: "Will you give him the tape then, Richard?"
Richard: "I don't know. Give it to him one day."
Craig: "Yeah. One day..."
Within hours of accepting a holiday assignment designed to develop her psychic powers; Sharon Macready found herself made prisoner, cut off from civilisation in an eerie and frightening laboratory. And the only neighbours she seemed to have were an old man of a hundred and four living in a glass house, and twelve zombies with super powers, all called Tommy Atkins.
So that when Craig Stirling and Richard Barrett came to England to investigate a biological warfare establishment, all three found themselves caught up in a process that seemed destined to convert humanity into robots, and wipe the face of the earth with bacteriological extinction.
